Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle but very specialised form of massage for both men and women who suffer from Lymphoedema after cancer treatment.
It is used in combination with other components of care, such as skin care, elastic compression garments, exercises and multilayer bandaging. It works best when used as part of a treatment programme and is not a ‘cure’ in itself.
MLD consists of very light, rhythmic and calming hand movements to stretch the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system. The aim of MLD is to redirect fluid away from swollen areas towards the healthy lymphatics in unswollen areas where the fluid can be drained by normal routes back into the circulation.
